Chancellor Yaolin Liu of Duke Kunshan University attended the 2024 Tengchong Scientists Forum and delivered a speech, sharing his insights on the development of higher education, as well as the Duke Kunshan's experiences and future outlook in international education cooperation.
DKU inaugurates AI-driven lung cancer research lab



The Jiangsu Provincial University Key Laboratory for Intelligent Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer has been inaugurated at DKU. The lab focuses on developing biomarkers, advancing lung cancer imaging techniques, and improving imaging quality control. Notably, it is pioneering the use of AI to create interpretable treatment models for lung cancer.
DKU appoints new executives



DKU has appointed several new executives to its leadership team this academic year: Lang Jun as Chief Financial Officer, Alan Matthew MacCharles as Senior Director of Executive Education and Lifelong Learning, Guang Li as Senior Director of Information Technology, Kai Huang as Dean of Research and Lab Infrastructure, and Lingling Wang as Registrar and Dean of Academic Services.
Global health symposium series examines pandemic readiness



The Duke Kunshan University Global Health Research Center kicked off its fall “This is Global Health” symposium series on Aug. 27 with a discussion on pandemic preparedness, featuring experts from Peking University, the World Health Organization’s China Representative Office, and Wuhan University. Titled “Are We Ready for the Next Pandemic?” the event brought together scholars, DKU faculty and students, and healthcare professionals from Kunshan to examine global, regional, and China-specific strategies for future health crises.
VaxLab’s 7th quarterly meeting convened at DKU



Duke Kunshan University hosted the 7th quarterly meeting of the Innovation Lab for Vaccine Delivery Research (VaxLab) on Sept. 12-13, bringing together representatives from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and leading research institutions, including Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Experts from organizations such as the Development Research Center of the State Council and the National Health Development Research Center, along with the public health team from IQVIA China, also participated in discussions on advancing vaccine delivery research.
Dr. Jingbo Cui acknowledged for environmental economics research and editorial appointments



Dr. Jingbo Cui, an associate professor of applied economics at Duke Kunshan University, has been recognized for his research on environmental economics, with his latest study published in Economics Research Journal, China’s top-ranked economics journal. The article, which examines the impact of environmental rights trading on green innovation, earned Third Prize at the 9th Higher Education Outstanding Research Awards in Humanities and Social Sciences, issued by China’s Ministry of Education. Cui has also been invited to join the editorial boards of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, two leading international journals in environmental economics.
DKU collaborates with China CDC to assess chronic non-communicable diseases in China



A breakthrough study led by Professor Lijing Yan from DKU’s Global Health Research Center, in collaboration with the Chronic Disease Center at the Chinese CDC, was published in The Lancet Regional Health—Western Pacific. The study, titled “Effect of the National Integrated Demonstration Area for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases Programme on Behavioural Risk Factors in China: A Synthetic Difference-In-Differences Study,” represents the first national-level assessment of efforts to slow the incidence of chronic diseases, reduce related morbidity and premature mortality, and lessen the overall disease burden. Professor Lijing Yan and Dr. Jing Wu, Director of the Chronic Disease Center at the Chinese CDC, served as the corresponding authors for the study. The research team also included Xian Zhang, a research fellow at the Global Health Research Center, Assistant Professor Ming Gu, and Yichen (Ethan) Fang, a Class of 2023 graduate from DKU’s undergraduate program.
Glow-in-the-dark fun lights up Orientation Week


Residence Life's "Hall-lympics: Can’t Stop Dancing in the Dark" event on August 15th featured three exciting glow-in-the-dark games that had students laughing and cheering. Decked out with lightstick wristbands and face paint in their courtyard colors—green, red, orange, and blue—the students transformed the AB Ballroom into a glowing dance party, bringing together students for a night of games, music, and fun.
DKU eyes strengthening Sino-European academic ties



Duke Kunshan University welcomed Kārlis Rokpelnis, the newly appointed EURAXESS-China representative, for a visit that spotlighted the institution's cutting-edge research capabilities and discussed enhanced academic cooperation between China and Europe.

During the visit, Kārlis had the opportunity to visit DKU’s research labs and expressed admiration for the state-of-the-art facilities and the cutting-edge research being conducted there. The dialogues on future scholarships and graduate program collaborations with European universities underscored the commitment to enhancing the global research landscape.
DKU Library attends Sino-Foreign Joint Venture University Library Annual Conference



The 2024 Sino-Foreign Joint Venture University Library Annual Conference, held from November 14 to 16 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), gathered professional librarians from Sino-Foreign Joint Venture Universities to exchange ideas and discuss the integration of AI technologies into diverse library services. Ten librarians and staff members from the Duke Kunshan University Library attended, and five of them shared their insights and practices under the conference theme “AI & I: Share Your Story”.
DKU hosts lecture on contemporary Chinese novels



On Oct. 20, 2024, Duke Kunshan University’s Library Tea House was the venue for an enlightening lecture titled “The Cultivation of Reading and Creative Abilities in Contemporary Chinese Novels.” This enriching session resulted from collaborative efforts between Duke Kunshan University and the Kunshan Arts & Culture Federation, with support from DKU Communications, DKU Library, and the Kunshan Writers Association. The featured speaker was the renowned novelist and literary scholar Dr. Wei Fang, a professor at Soochow University.
Exploring future of global education





On Sept. 19, 2024, Duke Kunshan University Library, together with the Princeton University Press China Office, welcomed Noah Pickus, Associate Provost at Duke University and Dean for Academic Strategy and Learning Innovation at DKU, for a Faculty Author Talk session. The event featured a discussion on Pickus’s newly published book, The New Global Universities: Reinventing Education in the 21st Century.
Various workshops enhance students’ career skills



From October to November 2024, the Office of Career Services at DKU organized a series of workshops to enhance its students' career development skills. Highlights included a series of Microsoft Technical workshops on imparting essential AI competencies to students. Additionally, Henry Cho, Senior Talent Acquisition Manager for North Asia & China at L'Oréal, shared his professional insights and offered valuable career tips to aspiring students.

The Career Services Office also brought in Matthew Clemons, Assistant Dean of Admissions at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, to discuss the application process at Fuqua. Dr. Brent Haas, Associate Dean and Director of Admission Affairs at Yenching Academy, provided a comprehensive introduction to the program. These initiatives underscored the commitment to empowering DKU students with the knowledge and skills necessary for their future path.

Kunshan Forecasts a 6.2% Increase in Regional GDP in 2024

The fourth session of the 18th Kunshan Municipal People’s Congress opened on Jan. 6, with the city government reporting steady economic growth and development efforts in 2024. According to the government’s work report, Kunshan implemented measures to stabilize growth, drive economic transformation, and improve livelihoods, contributing to high-quality development. The city’s regional gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to grow by 6.2% from the previous year, while general public budget revenue reached 45.86 billion yuan, a 0.4% increase. The total industrial output value above the designated size rose 7.6% to 1.24 trillion yuan. Read More  (Chinese)
