New sculpture unveiled at DKU campus

Duke Kunshan University has unveiled a new sculpture, The Force Awakens, by contemporary Chinese artist Gu Zhongsheng.

The sculpture draws inspiration from Gu’s childhood in a small volcanic town, where the imaginative threat of an eruption burying his hometown left a lasting impression. Standing 1.98 meters tall (6.5 feet), the piece incorporates concrete, steel bars, golf balls, and volcanic rocks. Its vibrant spheres, symbolizing the vitality of life, sharply contrast with the cold, gray concrete. This combination embodies the coexistence of hope and despair, inviting viewers to reflect on the themes of life, death, time and existence.

“The Force Awakens reflects the tenacity of life in the harshest conditions,” Gu said. “It’s about finding hope even when despair surrounds us.”

The sculpture’s materials and striking contrasts align with Gu’s artistic philosophy, which explores the human condition through interactions with nature.

Visitors can view the sculpture on the first floor of the Sports Complex, where it serves as a reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit.
