DKU professor co-edits groundbreaking book on philosophy and art

Duke Kunshan University philosophy professor Emily McWilliams has co-edited a new book that’s making waves in the world of philosophy and art.

The book, Normativity & Normativity of Art, available in digital and print formats, and published by the Balkan Analytic Forum, dives into how we think about rules, ethics, and art, pulling together essays from top scholars and offering fresh ideas on global philosophy.

“This book exemplifies how rooted globalism in philosophy can nurture meaningful intellectual exchanges across cultural and philosophical traditions,” McWilliams said. “It embodies the mission we embrace at Duke Kunshan University.”

The book, part of the Balkan Analytic Forum’s inaugural series and features contributions from two of its major conferences: BAF1: Normativity and BAF+: Normativity of Art, explores big questions about how norms influence both our understanding of art and our ethical decisions.

McWilliams noted how her involvement in this project resonates with her experience in DKU, a U.S.-China joint venture, where she sees firsthand the impact of global academic exchanges. She expressed gratitude for the support from the Balkan Analytic Forum.

“This project was a perfect fit for the kind of intercultural exchange we value at DKU,” McWilliams said.
