The earth observation and navigation research team from Wuhan University, jointly led by DKU chancellor and CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering) academician Liu Jinnan and two other CAE academicians, won an Innovative Team Prize at 2014 National Science Awards in Beijing on January 9th. Presented to no more than 3 teams annually, the prize is known for its high standards for the winners’ innovation ability, academic impact and social contribution. Wuhan University is the second among all universities affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education to win this award, just after Tsinghua University.
Under the leadership of Liu Jingnan and the two other academicians, the award-winning team has made a series of great achievements in earth observation and navigation technology recently, including increasing the mapping accuracy of satellite ZY-3 to within 10 meters, improving the orbit determination accuracy of GPS and Beidou Satellite System to the centimeter level, building the team’s lab into the only analysis and data center for IGS in Asia, as well as being the first to put forward the 3S theory. It has grown into one of the most influential research teams in this field around the world.
‘This is an honor for the whole team, ‘said Liu. ‘We have realized the dream that generations of scientists in Wuhan University as well as many others in this field have aspired to.’
