DKU research reveals new climate change impact on extreme weather
Researchers from Duke Kunshan University and Peking University report in a study published in Geophysical Research Letters that variability in the Southern
Annular Mode (SAM) — a key Southern Hemisphere circulation pattern — has intensified over the past 80 years and is expected to strengthen further under climate
change. The study links these changes to more frequent and severe extreme weather events, including heatwaves and heavy rainfall in regions such as Australia,
South America, and Antarctica. It also highlights undergraduate involvement from DKU Class of 2025 graduate Zhang Yuandong, who helped build a large-scale
climate data pipeline integrating over 27,000 weather stations.
