How can I get Library/Textbook Support?
- For access problems with student e-textbooks (including Kindle books), send an email Arabella Yue Yin, learning resource management coordinator, at ug-textbook@dukekunshan.edu.cn.
- For hard copies that you do not have with you, please check with your faculty to see if they will be posting readings on Sakai.
- If your instructor is not able to put readings on Sakai, we might be able to reimburse you for purchasing a new copy locally, on a limited basis. You should not do this unless you have determined, in consultation with your instructor, that it is absolutely necessary. A receipt or fapiao is required for all reimbursements.
I have concerns about internet access. What should I do?
You should have received instructions for setting up the new DKU VPN. For many people located in China, this has improved their access to sites, as well as speed. Please also refer to the matrix of what to use when. Install this as soon as possible and confirm your access to various sites you will need. We also suggest that you set up a Zoom meeting with friends or your academic advisor to test that platform. If you encounter technical difficulties, contact technical support. Keep your instructors informed of any technical difficulties.
What are the minimum bandwidth requirements to connect to Zoom and WebEx?

Is there anything I need to know about the new VPN?
- For the new DKU VPN, each session will expire after four hours from the time a user signs in. Users will receive a pop-up warning 10 minutes before the session expires. The VPN connection will disconnect after for hours even if it is active. Users have to re-authenticate (login with their NetID and password) if they want to continue using it. If you are taking an exam or timed assignment, log out and re-authenticate before you begin.
- The VPN session will be disconnected if the connection is idle (no traffic) for 20 minutes.
- Some sites require you to use DUO for multi-factor authentication. If you do not have access to the phone that was originally set up for dual authentication, you can change your multi-factor identification options at https://idms-mfa.oit.duke.edu/mfa/ under “Manage Devices”.
What tips do you have for participating in a Zoom session?
- Mute yourself when not talking!
- For large classes, use the “raise hand” feature.
- Zoom does not require VPN, regardless of location. Please turn off your VPN while using Zoom. While using Zoom, do not try to go to Sakai or any other site that requires a VPN or it will slow the connection down and may cause problems.
- Disconnect video and remain on audio if your internet connection becomes unstable.

What is Coursera, and can I really access all Coursera content?
- Coursera for DKU hosts a rich variety of thousands of online modules from many highly regarded universities from around the world, including the University of Michigan, Yale University, Peking University, Copenhagen University and Duke.
- These online modules are grouped into short, self-paced courses (typically composed of four to six modules) that include videos and text-based lessons, practice exercises, and assessments. Some faculty at Duke have used these courses as online textbooks and video enrichment for their face-to-face and online courses.
- DKU faculty may incorporate some Coursera material in their online courses. You can also access any of the courses directly.

What about my PE course? How will PE courses be handled online?
As all academic classes move online, DKU students will also have an opportunity to take and receive the credit for PE classes in sessions 3 and 4. We will redesign PE classes for online delivery via Zoom taking into consideration limitations students may have being confined to home. For this reason, considering various limitations and the fact that PE courses may be taken later, completing PE courses during Session 3 and Session 4 will be optional, and students may decide to withdraw without receiving “W” on their transcript.
- All students are asked to fill out the PE survey.
- If you are registered for PE in Session 3 and wish to receive PE credit: You may receive PE credit by taking online PE classes starting Feb. 24. Students will be required to take any two online PE classes a week.
- If you are registered for PE in Session 3 and wish to drop your PE course without receiving a “W” on your transcript: Fill out the PE survey. If you select this option for Session 3, you will be dropped from the course without penalty.
- For Session 4 (if necessary): We will cancel all current PE registrations and offer five specific online classes: yoga, Pilates, tai chi, boxing and IfaW, each of which will be given twice a week. Students interested in getting a PE credit will register for one of these courses in SIS any time until the end of the regular drop/add period on March 27.
I have concerns about academic freedom. What should I do?
This is an important consideration and will be more of a concern in some courses than others.
- So that students can access Zoom sessions asynchronously, we have suggested that faculty record Zoom sessions.
- You may not share the recording URL or record any sessions by any means without faculty authorization. To do so is a violation of the DKU Community Standard.
- Please confirm with your instructor whether the session is being recorded.
- Faculty can schedule audio-only Zoom sessions, so that the speaker is not readily identifiable.
- The instructor might allow you to use the blog tool in Sakai to write posts that only the instructor can see. It might be set up such that each student has the option to share their own posts with everyone or restrict it to the instructor, or it might be set up such that the instructor has selected the permission settings for all users.
- Breakout rooms in Zoom are not recorded without permission of the instructor.
- The instructor might allow you to make anonymous postings for forum topics within Sakai Forums. The instructor can see who has posted a comment but others cannot.
- The instructor should set clear, written guidelines and expectations.
- Please remember that what happens in the classroom should not be shared outside the classroom.
- Just as for in-person courses and activities on the DKU campus, the online courses operate under the Chatham House Rule. “When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”
- Violations of these guidelines are a violation of the DKU Community Standard.
- Consult with your instructor if you have specific concerns.
I have concerns about academic integrity. Do you have any suggestions?
- Academic integrity is one of the highest priorities at DKU. It is everyone’s responsibility to uphold our community standard. The community standard is a reflection of who we are and what we value.
- For every assignment, quiz or test, you are expected to pledge to uphold the DKU Community Standard. We will be setting up a feature in the assignments and quiz and test tools in Sakai that requires students to sign the pledge in order to do the assessment.
- If you have any questions about what is and is not permitted, such as whether or not notes can be used, ask your instructor.

I never check my email. Is that a problem?
Yes! It is essential that you check your email on a regular basis – at least once a day, and preferably more frequently. This is always important but even more so when we are using online instruction. Your instructors will be regularly communicating with you via email.
