DKU student team places in top 10 in L’Oreal Brandstorm Global Final

At the L’Oreal Brandstorm Global Final in London, Team Blue Devil—which consists of three undergraduates from the Class of 2025—made it to the top 10.

After placing second out of more than 7,500 Chinese teams at the L’Oreal Brandstorm China Final in April, the DKU team, which consisted of Jiaxin Shi, Jiaxuan Mei, and Zihan Liu, competed against 43 of the top teams in the world in London.

The three undergraduates developed an intelligent comb that uses optical technology to scan and generate personalized hair data and employs oil capsules for tailored styling options, saving time and minimizing hair damage. They used 3D printing to turn their idea into a working product and conducted a series of tests to refine it.

As the team leader, Jiaxin Shi spearheaded market analysis, while Jiaxuan Mei concentrated on consumer research and industry studies, and Zihan Liu focused on product design, market forecasting, and competitive analysis.

“I learned how to think from a global perspective at Duke Kunshan University, which enabled me to understand global market trends and consumer needs,” Jiaxin Shi said.

“DKU’s emphasis on developing students’ cross-cultural communication skills and global awareness enhanced my ability to approach problems with a more open mind and acute vision.”

Thousands of participants, including L’Oreal’s Chief Web3 and Metaverse Officer, have successfully launched careers at L’Oréal through the global innovation competition L’Oréal Brandstorm, which is open to individuals under 30. Salesforce is a partner in the program, providing extensive upskilling opportunities.
