Student Voice: Learning lessons as a school volunteer

Zaiying (Yvette) Yang, Class of 2023, from China, spent time last summer working at a primary school in Tongren, a rural town in mountainous Guizhou province, as part of the DKU Volunteer Organization.

“Together with other DKU volunteers, I provided support education for pupils there, which includes PE, arts, music and safety training courses,” she said.

“In the arts class, I taught students about painting with mindfulness, which combines my personal hobby of painting and clinical psychology techniques that I learnt from DKU, aiming to benefit students’ mental health conditions.

“Though my volunteering time in Tongren only lasted 11 days, it has become an indelible part of me.

As a so-called education supporter, I feel that I’m the one who was more of supported by these children and frontline teachers. I feel impressed by their strong willpower and eagerness of seeking opportunities and knowledge, although they’re faced with great inequality.

“Inspired by this experience, I truly hope to help minimize such inequity in the future, with full use of what I have learnt and known.”
